After installing Ubuntu 11.10, you should have noticed Banshee Media Player as the default media player. But, this is an embarrassing media player that many people hate and even I do. The best Media Player to replace this is the VLC Media Player that can play a wide range of video formats, yet an Open Source software.
This is an article about how to install VLC media player in Ubuntu 11.10 (and maybe in later versions too). Make sure your Internet connection is established before doing this. There are two ways to do this.1. The Terminal Way :
To install VLC media player using the Ubuntu Terminal, follow the simple steps given below :Step 1 -
Open the Terminal either by searching in the Dash Home or by using the short cut key [Ctrl] + [Alt] + [T]Step 2 -
Then type in the following code in the terminal and Hit Enter.
sudo apt-get update
This will ask for the system password. Type the root password and press Enter.sudo
- it means you do a function as the administrator using the root account.apt-get
- whenever you deal with packages, you need to type this code.update
- this updates all the available software packages in the Ubuntu repository.
What the above code does is it updates all the available software packages to give you the latest version of the softwares to be installed in your system. So, whenever you want to install any software in your system, you need to type this code to get the best out of the available software updates.Step 3 -
Then, type in the following code and press Enter.
sudo apt-get install vlc vlc-plugin-pulse mozilla-plugin-vlc
Then, hit y
to continue and press Enter.install
- installs the packages that are listed next to this word.vlc, vlc-plugin-pulse, mozilla-plugin-vlc
- those are the package names that are to be installed.
Using the above code, we install three packages namely vlc
. You can install as many packages as you want by using a single command by listing them after the install keyword, separated by spaces.
If you want the three packages to be installed individually, you can use the following sequence of codes :
sudo apt-get install vlc
sudo apt-get install vlc-plugin-pulse
sudo apt-get install mozilla-plugin-vlc
This will install the VLC media player and the associated support packages in your system.
2. Using the Ubuntu Software Center :
You can also install VLC Media Player from the Ubuntu software center.Step 1 -
Open the Ubuntu Software Center.Step 2 -
Type VLC in the search box, select the VLC package and click "Install".
This will install VLC Media Player with the associated packages in your computer. This method is comparably easier than the first method. How to open VLC media player
In-order to open VLC after installation, go to the Dash Home and type VLC. After opening it, right click it from the Utility Launcher and mark the option "Keep the Launcher" so that you don't need to go to the Dash Home and search every time you want to open VLC.
