From reading your post its hard to me to ascertain exactly what aspect of Linux you would like some information on. I would suggest that many of the problems you might have that a google search would turn up a good answer (there seems to be lots of information out there on the web.)
For general *nix background and information a quick read of "The art of Unix programming", which I posted a link to the online version under the articles forum might provide you with some more general information. Although GNU Linux might seem difficult initially, after you get your head around the ideas and concepts behind it then you will be fine (I actually find it much easier to use than Windows.)

is quite useful to ease you into it.
You have mentioned the kernel, if you are new to Linux and just wish to learn how to use it then I suggest forgetting about the kernel for now, until you have mastered the basic usage of the OS. If you are looking for information about the kernel then http://kernel.org/
is a good hub of information.
