How to people go about making logos for sites? I made one the other day, but had to purchase an image to be part of it. I found GIMP's plugins to be invaluable, especially the text manipulation tools for rotating text etc...

Anyone got any tips or hints for logo creation?

Just something that explains what your site is about (kinda has a 'theme' to it, to make your site), and make it unique and orignal

But the challenge is actually making that - what tools do people use for it? I found GIMP useful

Try using Paint.net. It's just like PhotoShop but free and they have loads of free plugins that you can download from their forums.
For images and what not, you could always go with ding bat fonts for it. It's not the best quality or look but it'll do.

When I create a logo, or even a simple design for one, I envision the site's genre. That's my inspiration.

You don't have to buy logos or images from external sites to include in your logo. Simply, you can make your own, find free vectors, cut and paste (chop extra things in the image you don't need), and then fade that image into the current one. All these are simple and are great for creating a logo.

What you may not find here, you may want to read here for more tips.

Cheers.

When I make a logo, one thing I do is make a transparent border.  That way my logos for my forums blend into the colors, especially making it easier to transition into a new color scheme.

I use both illustrator and photoshop when creating logo's
The main idea is to capture your website in either a
figuritive, text or even an abstract form.

Styles to be used such as proffesional, corporate,
childish, comic, scary etc also come into effect.

Also colour is the main purposes as well due, to
this will speak alot about your company brand, and will
have its own meaning.

The main objective,
create something that people will recognise visually,
example, NIKE, REEBOK, MC DONALDS etc

I find the best logo design that are illustrated in the form of an art rather than a text. The shapes of the logo should also blend on the theme of the site.

Well if you aren't designing logos for a living and only plan to do your own I actually created a couple using the basic tools already on my computer - like paint, Microsoft digital image, etc ! You can also find a lot of free tools to use if you do a search -I just think its a waste to pay for something you will probably only use a few times tops.

Photoshop is good. More important in logo designing is the idea, no matter what tool you use. More complicated logo doesn't necessarily is a good one !
