Best start language is C.  I think C is the base of all programming language.

I agree with C or C++.  C++ includes more as far as libraries are concerned and derived from C from what I know.  But if you can learn C++ other languages should be cake for you.

For really powerful programming C++, all operating system have c++ support. you can use different GUI toolkit to build desktop application in a wider range. nothing required standalone exe

Support Goes To Java . it lacks beautiful GUI Desing capability.and a bit slower
