Best start language is C. I think C is the base of all programming language.

I agree with C or C++. C++ includes more as far as libraries are concerned and derived from C from what I know. But if you can learn C++ other languages should be cake for you.

Easy To Learn and Powerful, suitable For Mass Development is the Microsoft's VB.NET ,but this is so far not cross platform. only works on windows.may be worked with linux in C# .NET(Search Mono Project) requires .NET to be installed
For really powerful programming C++, all operating system have c++ support. you can use different GUI toolkit to build desktop application in a wider range. nothing required standalone exe
Support Goes To Java . it lacks beautiful GUI Desing capability.and a bit slower
