I have gotten myself a Sun Enterprise server, with lots of storage, quite a few processors and redundant power supplies. I have to now find a use for it and am considering setting up an ISP (specifically to serve web pages from) - what do people think would make a good set of features and at what sort of price? - I am thinking of providing the usual such as MySQL, PHP, CGI, FTP, Cpanel etc but what other things do people find useful (for instance is a Tomcat server something which is nice to have?)

Also, I am a great believer in Unique Selling Points - is there anything that people think should be provided by an ISP but isn't?

I am still undecided whether or not I am going to do this, is it worth it?

Nick

Well I think you mean you want to setup a host, not a ISP (ISP = Internet Service Provier).

Depending on how much space you have (That would be nice to know if you wouldn't mind telling us, so we can help).
I believe you would have to install each, MySQL,PHP and everything else that you want seperatly, and have them connect with each other. Also, im not sure if you know this or not, but CPanel isn't free. One I saw at Cpanel.Net was $400+.

Also, check other hosting sites, see what they offer, and try to do that, but with a lil' extra.

Right, thats interesting you say that.... I use terms host and ISP interchangably (because when you host a page for someone you are providing an internet service)

Space wise, initially a few hundred GB, but I have the option of purchasing some very large storage servers if needed (a few hundred GB will be enough initially and then I will earn sufficient amount of ££ to purchase extra storage if needed.) Installing MySQL, PHP etc is easy to do, but I want to know what extra would be nice to have available too.

I forgot that CPanel wasn't free - do they do a "basic" cheap version?

Umm, Im not sure. I just quickly looked through http://cpanel.net.

Also, you may want to start out with handpicking customers based on what they need (such as space), because that will also mean you have less clients, and you could provide a better support for them, and help them with things (such as if they need help installing something.

Things extra could be just offering Fantastico (http://www.netenberg.com/fantastico.php) which is a automated installation script for things such as CMS's, Forums, Blogs etc... You could also offer to install scripts for them. Try and have a good support system, which is something you would really want to look into.

Also, if you create a support forum I'd be glad to help you.

Cheers - an excellent point about support, I hadn't really considered that.

As I say, not sure if I will do this yet, still thinking about it!

Another question, are you running this from your home, or is it from another host that you're paying for?

I see. Does your current ISP (The one to be able to go online) allow you host? If they do you should check your bandwidth limits.

Theres alot to it, but it can be worth it if done right.

I don't know, why do other hosts do it?

You could have one thing where its free, but you place (a) ad(s) on all the sites, and have a removal fee. Then have a paid one with no ads.

Yes, sorry for any confusion.

I have actually gone back to the drawing board with this.... the server I have is, well a server, and very loud when its on (to keep it cool) - unfortunately this means its not particularly practical for me to have it on all the time, I am not sure if its worth modifying it to make it quieter

Well, if its because of the heat, you could just put a (small) fan in front of it, that should keep it quiet.

No, its all the fans inside (3 monster fans and about 5 or 6 smaller ones) to keep all the CPUs, power supplies etc cool - without these it would dangerously overheat. Removing these fans would be a bad idea too, although I did consider removing some of the CPUs to reduce the heat generated. I might sort some noise reduction box thing out, not decided yet.

I accept in fact gone aback to the cartoon lath with this. . . .  the server I accept is, able-bodied a server, and actual loud if its on (to accumulate it cool) - abominably this agency its not decidedly applied for me to accept it on all the time, I am not abiding if its account modifying it to accomplish it quieter.
