Hello all,
I am graduating in June ’09 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Software Engineering, and I’m in dire need of some direction as far as my career path goes. I thought this discussion board would be a good place to get some ideas.
I come from a textile design background (I was laid off back in ’06). I was awarded tuition assistance, so I decided to take a different career path and enroll in a technical college for Software Engineering. I’ve been laid off a few times during my time and I figured this new career path would provide me some with pretty good job security.
I was hired three months ago as a junior programmer for a small company. However, I’ve come to the conclusion that writing code is just not for me because I have a difficult time understanding the logic. I’ve always had this problem during my schooling. In school however, I typically have 1 to 1 ½ weeks to finish an assignment, so I have time to wrap my brain around the logic. However, in this programming position, I’m expected to successfully comprehend existing code, and write new code within a pretty short time frame and it’s making life miserable for me. It’s getting to the point where I dread going into work.
My question is; are there any jobs in my field that don’t require coding? I discussed this with one of my instructors, and he suggested a career as a Project Manager or a Systems Analyst. What do you folks think? Is this feasible? Does anyone else out there have any other suggestions? They’re greatly appreciated. Much thanks in advance.
