Well a nice book I am currently using to learn Java was written by two University professors (English and Australian I believe), and they teach via a ground up approach getting into GUI and Object Orientated in later stages of the book.

It is actually focused around a neat compiler great for beginners called http://bluej.org/.

The book is called: "Objects First with Java - A Practical Introduction using BlueJ"
Written By: David J. Barnes & Michael Kölling
Info: Prentice Hall / Pearson Education, 2008 ISBN 0-13-606086-2

That's actually a recent edition of the book (4th), o is very up to date.

Good Luck!

I think if you are just staring java then the best book for you would be the book by an indian author Balaguruswamy...........
and if you want to learn more advanced java then the best book is BY Herbt Schildt...........
I have studied both of these books and these books are really good..............
You must give them a try for sure..........

you can get training in the latest version of Java by using the newest edition of that book, Murach's Java SE 6. It covers the classic core features that make Java such a stable product, as well as SE 6 enhancements like the StAX XML API, automatic database driver loading, iterable SQL exceptions, and the Derby database that now comes with Java.

According me Objects First With Java is best book.  This book is the first fully integrated in the Java development environment BlueJ textbooks and teaching object-oriented principles.  The book is a valuable way to introduce new programming.

I would suggest the latest version of Y. Daniel Liang's "Introduction to Java Programming." He publishes books at two levels: Brief and Comprehensive. My recommendation would be the Comprehensive volume, which as of December 2009 is in its 8th edition.

The Comprehensive volume has been a standard at many IT and Computer Science programs for years. My first hand knowledge is from courses taken at the B. Thomas Golisano School of Computing and Information Sciences at the Rochester Institute of Technology. There is also a companion website operated by the author with additional resources and aides that are edition specific and accessible with the purchase of this text.
