The important is the design should proper clearly. If you can see, many website has no basic color used, that make eye irritation to read the content on the website. Like white background and used yellow text.

I'd go half and half.

But if I had to choose I'd get a basic template that was easy on the eye, but instead of getting a designer I'd get a content writer, and search engines like fresh new content, so I'd prefer for someone to see a basic website at the top of Google than an awesome website that only 2 or 3 people ever see.

As far as SEO goes, the content is more important, but the design can be a big factor as well. If the design sucks and the coding is bad, it may be hard for search engines to read through the content. As far as websites that don't really require a lot of traffic, design would definitely be more important. It's really up to the niche you pick.

I myself would split my budget into two. Half would go onto a reasonable and clean site design and the other half would be spent on content creation, with a possibility for investment in SEO.

According to me both of them are important, if you have good design and bad content then noone would like to visit your website and vice versa.

I think it really depends. No matter how aweful it is, if you have some wonderful content then people will work around that - but your not doing yourself or them any favours!

I think it was Bjarne who said that some people are content providers, some are website designers. Personally I am a content provider rather than a website designer, but I do spend atleast some time considering ease of navigation. I do believe that people do have a natural tendancy to one of the other, and people who are good at both are very fortunate.

I would try to be as self sufficient as possible, design and code my own and do everything myself, saves you money and you know what work went into the design. Content can also be created by you, just read about your subjective and become involved.

Hmmm, I guess I've only ever created websites that I already have the content for so I would pay for design.

I would rather do both, but lean towards a better design a little more. Only because, it makes it attractive, and writing that isn't "perfect" will make it seem like its another person writing it, and not some robot.

Frankly speaking for a successful online presence both content and web design are important. But i personally feel that for a well designed site, content is much more important than design.

What does google consider? I mean, of course it needs to navigate a site to index it but does their SERP bit also depend on how often your site is updated?

If I had to choose only one, I would go for content. For me, as long as the website is readable and accessible it's ok. Take Google for example. The simplest design and the most visited site (i think). I would definitely go for content.

Content is overall more important, but if the site looks like heck, it isn't going to attract too many people that turn out to be the daily or weekly read a couple pages folks that help drive up pageviews.

It's a balancing act between the two, but I think overall, the content of the site is the slightly more important one.

yes it is off course balancing. At the start of any website the when the site has very low count of content then design might help in for attracting new users on the site. but then content is required to maintain those users on the site and then bring new users. So content is also important.

If one think from SEO part then everyone knows that content plays a major role in bringing traffic, but design also has its some share in playing role in that site's SEO, as light weight designed sites are very easy to crawl for Search Engine crawlers.

I feel that content is more important than design in my opinion.  Now I'm not saying that design means nothing in a web site, don't get me wrong.  I feel that as long as the design isn't to the point of detracting people from the site, it is acceptable and the content must be focused on so there is something to read and post about.  Obviously once you have a decent niche in the content, then you can do the finishing touches on the design.

This is like saying what is more important in a car, the internals or the body? If the body looks like crap, no one is going to want to buy one, and if the engine falls out when you take it for a test drive, you for sure aren't going to say that you want to try it again. Content and design are equally important on any web site. If you don't have a tolerable design, the best content in the world won't help you. But all design and no content, people are at your site for a second and then are bored.

I agree, get a good theme, modify it yourself then hire some posters/writers

I think it is both. To draw attention, you need to have a good design and a good content. A good design is useless if the content is nonsense, and a good content cannot be emphasized if it has unappealing design.

If I could I'd split it between the two.  If I had to choose one though I'd choose content over design.  Although design is an important factor, content is much more important.  I don't think people would come to your site just to look at the pretty background and buttons, I for one would only join a site that has actual content on it, such as this site, not just sites that have cool designs.

The two of them .. absolutely ..

You must make a search engine/visitor friendly design AND navigation first ..
after that the content ..

You may give me some examples of successful websites with bad design .. but there must be a very good content out there .. in conclusion it's a balance between two important things ..

Don't tell me about it . .

I will prefer content rather than design. A good content is always drive me to return back to visit the site, and even i will bookmark the site for future reference. As for design it is good to attract visitors but not able to retain them if without good contents.

For creating a better and good looking website design is the main part of any website.  If design look so good and very attractive than people like that website and they like to surf that website mostly.  So always give a main priority to designing portion to website.

Each plays its own unique part.
Some websites have better content then design, and some design is better
than the content.

I have to agree that both are important, but let's face it: most of the "professional" designs used by big business sites are black or gray text on a white background. They may have splashes of color here and there, but black and white tends to rule the day.

A fancy design is great, but if you have no content to display in it, the design is wasted. You really need content.

I think both of those two choices are necessary to achieve the best experience of your visitors allowing them to bookmark your site and come back several times.  It wouldn't just work when you simply rely on the design or content of your site.

i say simple design but compelling content.   while the design does attract (and hopefully keep) your online visitor's attention it's the content that's the meat of the website.

IMO, both are important but content comes first because a good design might give a website a nice professional look, but without good and regularly updated content visitors won't have a reason to stay and explore and eventually come back.

On my point of view.  Having a good design rather than relative content makes the website improve more.  Audience view site by criticizing first at what fonts or color you use on a website etc.  What I'm saying is that you should put 75% design improvement and 25% relative content.

Yes, I agree with u guys! Good designs(and simple to load quickly) for attracting new members and better contents to maintain those users.

But, websites without an attracting look will always be empty without users.

The web site design should be clear and it is better not to use many colours as it irritates the eyes.  But a good design is irrelevant without good content.

For me Content is the most important; Many of the user use the internet to search for the specific information and services...
The design is considered if you want to gain a traffic from the user who use internet as a hobby and not seeking for specific info or topic...
