Blog is a very simple word to remember and the reason is of this also very simple. It is used very frequently on the internet now a day.
The term Blog is short form of ‘Web Logs’. Generally Blogs are not bound to some specific language but they span dozens of different languages. There are Millions of Blogs available on the internet which was written by Millions of peoples and more on that there are Millions of people who read these Blogs. But nobody really care about the different categories or types into which these Blogs can be fall into.

Typically there are six different categories of Blogs or we can say types of Blogs available. These categories of Blogs or Types of Blogs are defined by the method in which content is written in them.


1) Media:

Based on the type of content used in the Blog, a Blog can be said as -

Vlog – where Blog contains videos as its content
Linklog – where Blog contains links as its content
Sketchblog – where Blog contains sketches as its contents
Photoblog – where Blog contains photos as its content
Tumblelogs – where Blog contain mixed media format as its content


2) Device:

Based on the type of device used to create a Blog, a Blog can be said as –

Moblog – where Blogs are written by using some mobile phone or PDA.


3) Genre:

Based on the main subject used in the Blog, a Blog can be said as –

Education Blog
Project Blog
Travel Blog
Music Blog
Political Blog


4) Legal Status:

Based on the legal status of the Blog, a Blog can be said as –

Private Blog
Public Blog
Personal Blog
Business Blog
Corporate Blog
Marketing Blog


5) Search Engine:

Blogosphere are the search engines which are used to search the contents of the Blogs available on the internet.


6) Communities and Directories:

Bloghood is collection of local Blogs. Along with Blogs there are Blog Directories and Blog Communities which are dedicated to Blogs and can be used to connect to different Blogs and Bloggers

When I was doing graduate research in document type definition / description (in the field of archives management) the primary issue to resolve was whether such descriptors / tags dealt with the form (format) or the genre (type of message). I think it is useful to distinguish between form/format and genre whenever possible.
