Seo is just combination of on page and off page optimization. I am using on page and off page techniques for my site.
On page refer to site optimization like meta tags, contents of site etc
Off page completely refer to
link building
Forum posting
social bookmarking
Press release
Directory submission
article submission
These are quicker way of link building. you can you these way to promote your site online. I am doing manual submissions for my site, i think all the webmasters are doing manual submissions only. so no need to go for paid service . It will affect your ranking and chance for Google to ban your site. If you follow these techniques , you will get the traffic to your site and search engine ranking also improved because of that your page rank will also high.

There is no software which will give you gurantee of high ranking, so either we have to do this job ourself of rely on other SEO service provider, I am doing this job my self and getting good results, internet is a good teacher learn and implement.
