7 reason why mysql over ms sql server
September 04, 2009, 11:58:15 PM
here are 7 reason why to use mysql.
1. It is free.. well can you beat that?
2. It take less space and less resources.. comparing SQL 2008 1.6Gb to just 160 MB.
3. Faster then MS SQL 2008... yup, MySql can manage upto 30TB of data on single server, and incredibly fast response.
4. Supports flexiable storage engines. it supports pluggable storange engine architecture such as MyISAM, InnoDB, Merge, Memory, Archive, Cluster
5. Supports all plateforms, well you want and IBM Machine, or Sun Develop storage engine, then for sure they will never provide support for windows. They will be interested in their own platforms..
6. Unique Query Cache (stores query and result set) are available only on mysql.
7. Supports all features which ms sql 2008 does have, and ms sql 2005 never had them.

I think the free part (1) is the biggest reason why people use it. For websites and other non-corporate users, worrying about MS SQL licenses simply isn't worth it.

Even though I have licenses for SQL Server, I really tend to stick with MySQL personally. Especially since I mainly focus on websites, it's easier to maintain MySQL versus MS SQL Server.
