I read an article the other day, which suggested that in order to master a specific subject you need to put in 10000 hours of practice. It went onto suggest that programming is the same - if you put in 10000 hours of practice you will master it.
Personally, 10000 hours seems a little low - what do other people think about this?
How many hours do you think you have put into programming?
Nick

Wow...that's 5 years of doing nothing but programming for the entire work day. I'd say you would be pretty darn good by that point. Not sure when "expert" should be applied, but I bet for some people that would certainly be it. I have not put anywhere near that many hours into programming! But I've also never claimed to be an expert either!

Thinking about what you said, do people think that 10000 hours is a whole career, part of one or more than one?

Well, depending if he/she wants that job for their entire life, it could just be the beggining for them. It depends on what they want to do for the rest of their life.

10,000 hours? That's excessive. Yes, you may be an expert, but who really needs to be that good at something?

Well, according to the first post, it says to "Master" it. It could mean something different for everyone.

Someone who wants to be rich? I actually would guess that there are a significant number of people out there who have over 10000 hours experience - not lots, but a significant number.

Yes i think 1000 hrs is sufficient for good and master in programming but i think it is solely depends on you, how you are dedicated for learning and how far you understand that language.
