Its just there so nobody can just take it. You could really just put regular text on it, that would work

You can do it with regular text. Use it with regular colours or use transparent colours. Either one will do. Or you can just make an x going through the image. That's probably better. People can see the entire design better.

What I do is place the watermark in the image as a new layer, then change the opacity level of the new layer. That lets the watermark have a translucent look.

Quick Steps
1.Once your artwork is complete, you will have to create a new layer above all the layers. To keep things neat put all artwork into a seperate folder, so when this is paid for an easy "delete" of this layer can be done.
Or
You dont have to create a layer if you using a specific font, this will create a new layer for itself.
2. Once you finished place your image or text, a slight opacity over the image of 40% should suffice.
Outcome This protects your work from been stolen and used without payment. Copyright laws state that if a designer has a watermark, and an image is stolen and used, further charges can apply if caught.
This is the best way to protect yourself. Also it is a way of advertising yourself in a little way. Somebody might like the image and upload it to show thier friends, this is free advertising.
So get your watermark on!

In order for a watermark to be effective and enforceable at law, you'll also need to stick a copyright symbol - © - in your watermark. As already posted, the best way to do it is to write over the image in text and then adjust the opacity of the text so that it is see-through. Some designers will also bevel the text to make it even more obvious.
A quick and dirty way to write the copyright symbol is either to type (C) or to hold Alt and hit 0169 on your numeric keypad - i. e. Alt+0169 - which will give you the proper symbol (©).
